This shelter is better than the street and I'm grateful they offered me a bed. However, as time has passed, I've noticed things that occur that are very concerning. They have women with small children in the same large area that adult men and women sleep and eat. It is not an appropriate environment for kids. Also, none of the staff or the directo, has any training of any kind in behavior health, alcohol or drug counseling, trauma/abuse survivors, or anything else. The director is a real estate professional and the staff are former residents or untrained amateurs at best and it shows. They unknowingly traumatize these residents and it needs to stop. I'm not faulting anyone, they are doing the best they can. But they violate the clients ethically and morally all the time, and someone needs to address this with the board of directors. There is one case manager with training, but she's hardly ever there. It's a difficult situation made worse by absolute refusal to consider any complaints or suggestions, if you don't like it your free to leave, but you're here because no one else wants you". I actually heard say that to a client who suggested allowing people with diabetes to eat food after 8:00pm. The city thinks it's a great success.
